Goblins v. Commonwealth solo playtest

Goblins v Commonwealth, solo rules play-test This is a write-up of an early play-test of some solo rules I’ve been working on. They’ve developed quite a bit since then, but at least this will give you a flavour of the approach. Essentially, I’ve layered some decision-charts over the top of the regular rules, to imitate another player. It’s never going to be the same as playing against another person, but my aim is to give a structure to guide choices and end up with a challenging, satisfying game, benefiting from the core Moonstone mechanics. Let’s see if I’m on the right path… Goblins (me) Shabaroon The Mortician Ribald Goblin King Herbert Growbottom Commonwealth (opposing troupe) Loci Agatha Tavernfrau Fritz Mr Toodles Gertrude, Faery Hunter In these solo rules, the opposing troupe gets given the most advantageous side and they also gain initiative. This aims to make up for their more predictable activations. The moonstone spread definitely favours the Commonwealth, with thre...

Gnomes v. Faeries

Image
WARNING: This report contains extreme violence from the very beginning! APOLOGY : I was trying out a new battle mat this game. Unfortunately, it gave out a lot of glare, which spoils some of the pictures. Faeries Gwendoline Slivertongue Fencer Fraya Diana Wasp Gnomes Mama Gimble Gradock Muridae Billy Morris Young Jack The moonstone scatter is pretty even. Looks like this will be  balanced game. Turn 1 Gwendoline, Slivertongue, Morris and Mama Gimble all set to harvesting. Wasp moves up to guard a moonstone, only for Billy to attack him with ramming speed, dealing 2 damage, which Fraya immediately heals, before dealing 3 damage to Billy with fizzle-pop . Gradock snare traps Wasp, bluffing a green 1. Wasp reaction steps to re-engage Billy, so he cannot harvest next turn. Diana casts horrifying visions on Billy, wounding Wasp to take extra cards. She plays a pink 2, reducing Billy to 2 wounds. Muridae rushes up to support him. Young Jack helps Gradock with his harvest ...

Leshavult v Goblins

Leshavult v Goblins Zorya Danica Antonia Kavanagh Beast Wendigo Firespitter Beaky Bobby Seasick Stu Boob Boom McBoom El Capitano Vicious Midget The goblins win the roll-off and choose the side, giving themselves the slight advantage of having four moonstones closer to them and slightly less deep. Turn 1 Zorya begins in a typical witchy way, using Visions of the Future on Danica, triggering her catastrophe to wound and distribute energy to the rest of the troupe. They use this to surge forward this turn. Firespitter responds by targeting Zorya, dealing and additional 2 damage. Antonia tries to heal her, but is caught in a bluff and end up reducing her fellow witch to only two wounds! Beaky Bobby is the first to fully harvest a moonstone. He also shouts at Firespitter, pushing him further towards the Leshavult line. El Capitano waits patiently for the Beast to finish his activation, before taking a shot with his pistol. Kavanagh steps in to block line of sight for a second ...

Fauns v. Humans

Image
This was an opportunity for me to field a painted Old Calders, Billy and Wendigo for the first time, and to try to get myself liking Fauns. Did I succeed? Read on to find out… Fauns Boris Chubs Wendigo Jackalope Brother Daniel Humans Fritz Billy Old Calders Sir Hogswash Eric the Squire Humans win the roll-off and choose the side – which turns out to be a bigger advantage than I’d thought when deciding whether or not to call mulligan: three moonstones right by their deployment zone and another two (at depth 3) within easy reach. Turn 1 The turn begins as a harvest-fest, with Billy, Eric, Jackalope, Old Calders and Brother Daniel all harvesting and moving towards the enemy. Chubs uses Rouse on Boris, giving him the energy to summon two bunnies, which bound forward towards the moonstones in the centre of the board. Meanwhile, Fritz stakes a claim to the others. I’ll leave you to decide which is the most convincing.     Who would you rather be up against? Wendigo uses his Min...

Humans v. Goblins

Image
The goblins have been getting a lot of action in these reports, but this is the first time they’re controlled by me. My objective: to prove the worth of Vicious Midget, who has failed miserably to make an impact in almost all the games so far. Did I succeed? Read on and find out! Humans Baron von Fancyhat Eric the Squire Sir Hogswash (freshly painted!) Flintlock Friar Flavious Dim & Dimmer Goblins (me) Vicious Midget Goblin King Mortician Seasick Stu Firespitter Grub The goblins win the roll-off and chose the side; humans have initiative. The initial set-up (minus a Fancyhat and Firespitter activation) looks like this:  (You can’t quite see Grub, but he’s skulking about by one of those standing stones) Turn 1 Baron von Fancyhat helps Eric to harvest the first moonstone. Firespitter harvests the one just next to him. Grub does his Wyrmhole to come out by the wall near Fancyhat, staking claim to the depth 4 moonstone and harvesting it down to a value of 2. Grub in a...
